UK Older People's Day 2009

UK Older People’s Day is now in its third year and we want to build on the huge success of last year by getting even more people involved in the celebrations across the UK in 2009.

Last year, over 50,000 people took part in 900 local events across the country in the weeks around 1 October. The events celebrated the role that older people play in our society, promoted a more positive view of later life, and were also a great opportunity for generations to get together and interact. Events varied from allotment projects to tea dances, exercise classes to achievement awards, and ranged from a couple of hours to multi-day festivals.

The theme for the events in 2008 was ‘bringing generations together’ - recognising that there are many benefits in getting to know people outside of your own age group and in being active in the community where you live.

This theme proved so popular, it will be extended in 2009, with even more community activities to help people of different ages, from different backgrounds, come together.

By getting together we are strengthening our local communities and playing an important part in creating safer, friendlier neighbourhoods for both young and old. Young people are given the opportunity to contribute and feel valued, and to be inspired and supported by adult role models, while older people have the chance to pass on their skills and experiences and become actively engaged in their communities. As a result, stereotypes are challenged and mutual understanding and respect between generations are promoted.
